Set in the 1870s in the early days of the town of Laramie, Wyoming, stories are related from the viewpoint of two friends, Slim Sherman and Jess Harper, ranchers who operate a swing station (that is, a sort of combination ranch and stagecoach depot) for the Great Overland Mail Stage Lines. Slim Sherman and his 14-year-old brother, Andy, were determined to maintain the family ranch after their father had been shot by a land-grabber. Jonesy, a friend of their father who had helped raise them, was around to help run the ranch. A drifter named Jess Harper was persuaded to settle down and join in running the swing station.
