Young and innocent Julie meets a mysterious man who turns out to be the famous American novelist Max Oliver. Devastated by the recent death of his wife, the beautiful dancer Lucia Giordano who is also the subject of Oliver's latest book "A Woman," Max is rescued out of his grief by Julie. He falls in love with her and invites her to live with him in his house in Italy. Warned against the idea by her closest friend, Julie goes with him anyway. While concerned about being overshadowed by the memory of Max's dead wife, Julie's insecurity quickly turns into full-on paranoia: the more she learns about Lucia Giordano the more she obsesses about her, almost to the point of madness.
