Synopsis
Originally aired on PBS, the three-tape set America in the 40s: A Sentimental Journey recounts the culture of this tumultuous and influential decade. Graphic wartime footage and other archival clips, as well as fascinating interviews and personal stories combine with the popular music of the day in a moving look at the fads, fun, triumphs, and tragedies of the time. Part three takes viewers down memory lane to the years 1945-1949. In this final program, witness how the nation celebrated the end of World War II. Relive the period when GIs returned to civilian life, families moved to the suburbs, baby boomers entered the world, and television arrived on the scene. As the decade ends, America once again experiences peace, prosperity, and a bright future. Other programs in this series hosted by Charles Durning are America in the 40s: 1940-1942 and America in the 40s: 1942-1945.
