Synopsis
The Man Who Was Exchanged is the English-language title of this Hungarian domestic drama. Based on a play by Adorjan Bonyi, the plot centers on Peter Benedik (Ferenc Kiss), a far-from-faithful husband who carries on an affair with a charming widow. While serving in WWI, Benedik befriends another soldier, Istvain Pongracz, who looks exactly like him (and who is also played by Ferenc Kiss). During an enemy attack, Benedik is killed and Pongracz is wounded. Their name-tags are accidentally switched, and as a result the amnesic Pongracz is sent back to Benedik's home and family. Convinced that he is Benedik, Pongracz turns out to be a better and more thoughtful husband than his look-alike ever could have been. Upon regaining his memory, Pongracz realizes that he's too much in love with Mrs. Benedik ever to give her up, leading to a happy ending for everyone except Benedik's widow mistress.
