Synopsis
Al Chet (I Have Sinned) was filmed in the Yiddish language, one of several such productions made in Poland before the tragic intervention of Hitler. The heroine is Esther (Rachel Holscher), a farm girl who falls in love with a dashing army officer. When the officer is killed in battle, Esther is left unmarried and very pregnant. The grief-stricken girl abandons her baby and leaves for parts unknown. Years later, Esther, now a wealthy and well-connected woman, returns to her village to reclaim her child, now a grown woman in love with an aspiring violinist. Without ever revealing her identity, Esther paves the way for her daughter's lasting happiness. The traditional self-deprecating comedy relief is in the hands of the team of Zigan and Schumacher, helpfully billed in the credits as "The Comedians." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
