Synopsis
Documentary that tells the inside story of our new global economy. The program chronicles the battle for economic power; the struggle between governments and markets around the world; the turmoil and upheavals of economic reform; the emergence of a new era of globalization; and the far-reaching debates about the shape of the world's economic future.
Part 1 identifies how the world, for the first half of the twentieth century, first moved toward government control in the centrally planned economies of the communist world, the "mixed economies" of Europe and the developing world, and the United States' regulated capitalism.
Part 2 investigates the failure of government-controlled economies in the 1980s and how new leaders embraced the idea of "shock therapy," a rapid conversion to free-market capitalism. The program focuses on how reform played out in Russia, the eastern bloc, Latin America and other countries as they lived through the upheavals of rapid change.
Part 3 tracks the explosive growth of the new world economy from the 1992 presidential campaign to the September 11th attack on America. The program examines the promise and the perils of the global economy in the 1990s, the threat of global contagion and the violent debate over globalization that first surfaced in the Seattle protests.
