A submarine encounters a group of unidentified objects emanating from an undersea trench which has caused the shift of two tons of water. Military forces decide to investigate the trench, from which signs of life have been detected. After the directive is changed, however, from studying the trench to using nuclear torpedos to stop the water from flooding the Earth, the crew of the submarine Hubris quickly finds itself attacked by a swarm of electric eels emanating from within the trench. The eels are soon determined to be intelligent sea creatures who have designed the trench, but the crew must race to communicate with the pack and warn them of an impending large-scale military attack headed their way.
