A woman takes off with her jailed sister's children to prevent them from being placed in foster care, and with the help of a stranger, is able to give them the Christmas they've always dreamed of. Emilie Dalton comes to the aid of her sister Berry when she is sent to a hospital jail ward on a drug charge. When social worker Ruth Doyle mentions that Berry's two children will be sent to foster care, Emilie loads them into her car and skips town with little money and no place to go. A waitress they meet at a small diner suggests that they stay in a house whose owner died and left it to a long-lost niece who never showed up to claim it. When morning comes, Emilie and the kids are welcomed by the local folk, including police officer Nathan Bishop, who assume she is the missing heir.
