Synopsis
Cristina da Pizzano, an Italian who lived in France during the period of transition between the darkness of the Middle Ages and the dawn of the Enlightenment, was the first woman in history to make a living with the poems she wrote and published. After growing up in the court of Charles V in France, where her father was court astrologer and physician, Cristina was left completely destitute during the struggle between the Armagnacs and the Burgundians. Desperate to find a way to support her two small children, Cristina overcomes hunger and fear, thanks to Charleton, a minstrel who tours the taverns, and Gerson, a theologist, as she discovers her talent for poetry. She quickly wins fame as a poetess of simple things, of the disadvantaged and of women, in a society that is thoroughly inhospitable to independent women.
