Grumpy and lonesome baker Grabosch can't bear the thought that his granddaughter Mathilda, now that her mother has died, will live with Tadeusz, her Polish father. He must get Mathilda back, by all means. He travels to Poland, seemingly to visit the family of his granddaughter to celebrate Easter, but his real reason is to gather enough evidence so he can claim custody. His plan seems to work out, since Tadeusz seems to be involved in shady business and the family lacks money and harmony. However, Grabosch's stubborn and very German attitude is changing slowly. Reason for this might be that Mathilda's Polish grandmother seems to be quite enamored by him.
