As far as abilities, the mermaids from Disney’s Peter Pan don’t display too many. They only appear to be skilled in sunbathing and nearly drowning Wendy, but maybe those are crucial talents for mermaids in Neverland.

Madison from ‘Splash’

Though Madison is adept at languages (learning English simply by watching TV) she doesn’t seem to have much control over her ability to transform from human to mermaid. She does, however, have a lot of charm and easily woos Allen Bauer (Tom Hanks).

Ariel from ‘The Little Mermaid’

We may not have all the facts, but we’re pretty sure Ariel has the best voice in the whole ocean — maybe even the whole world. Plus, she’s got a knack for trusting even the most sinister-looking sea-witches. Though it may not have been the best idea, the ability to trust did help Ariel find true love.

Ariel from ‘Once Upon A Time’

ABC Television Network
Like her cartoon counterpart, Ariel from Once Upon A Time has an unshakable faith in love as well as her beau, Prince Eric. However, this Ariel might have a bit more attitude; she certainly doesn’t put up with any of Captain Hook’s nonsense. Plus she can transform from human to mermaid by jumping into water, which comes in handy for traveling between magical realms.

Aquamarine from ‘Aquamarine’

Though Aquamarine can’t control her ability to transform from mermaid to human, she is capable of granting wishes — and, although it’s not a supernatural power, she’s also quite adept in social interaction. By that, we mean, she makes two lifelong friends and falls in love over the course of three days, so she must be doing something right.

In a superhero style take on mermaids, the girls of H2O: Just Add Water become mermaids after swimming in a magical pool. In addition to transfiguring from human to mermaid, the girls also have the capability of controlling water, which is pretty awesome.

Within Pirates of the Caribbean, mermaids are ferocious creatures and almost like sirens. They’re known for destroying ships and luring sailors to their deaths. However Syrena is a less violent mermaid who falls in love with Phillip (Sam Claflin). She also has magical tears — mermaid tears are needed to perform a ritual to find the Fountain of Youth.

Mylie from ‘Charmed’

The WB/The CW
Though Mylie becomes mortal in order to be with the man she loves, as a mermaid she was immortal, had incredible agility within the water, and could sense the location of other magical beings. As far as skills go, Mylie seems to be the most capable mermaid.
