In a rural town in 1930s Italy, a farming family, the Vigettis, are raising their children Edo, Sultana and Carlino, a young man much sought after by the lady folk. Wealthy landowners, the Ostis, live in a manor with three daughters who are of marrying age. The Osti parents decide to allow Carlino to court their older daughters in the hope that he will marry one of them. However, Carlino's courting of the girls is turned upside down by the sudden return of the youngest sister, the beautiful Francesca. For the two of them, it is love at first sight.
