A Prince And Forbidden Love In ‘A United Kingdom’ Trailer

‘A United Kingdom’ has everything that could be a Disney movie.

If I merely wrote a Prince is not able to marry who he chooses, it would sound like a male version of a film like Aladdin or The Little Mermaid. Now if we add in the prince happens to be black, and the woman happens to be a white woman from London, it veers off from the Disney analogy. Even more so, this story is based off the true story.

The story of ‘A United Kingdom’ takes place in 1940’s, Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana (David Oyelowo) who meets Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) while out in London playing pool. The two quickly fall in love, and Ruth learns that he happens to be a prince that must return home to his people. Their interracial relationship is not approved by their families, much less the British and South African governments. The two must defy families, the British empire, return to the African kingdom they’ve been banished from, and take back power.

A United Kingdom releases February 10, 2017.
