A Star Is Born and Black Panther nab Costume Designers Guild Awards nominations

Style experts behind A Star Is Born, Black Panther, and Crazy Rich Asians are among the top nominees for the 2019 Costume Designers Guild Awards.
Erin Benach’s work on Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s hit movie musical has earned her a mention in the Excellence in Contemporary Film category, going up against Mary E. Vogt for Crazy Rich Asians, Sarah Edwards for Ocean’s 8, Michele Clapton for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and Widows’ Jenny Eagan.
Triple Oscar winner Sandy Powell has double the chance to claim the Excellence in Period Film prize as she is up for both The Favourite and Mary Poppins Returns, nominated alongside Mary Queen of Scots’ Alexandra Byrne, Julian Day from Bohemian Rhapsody, and Marci Rodgers who created the looks for BlacKkKlansman, and Black Panther’s Ruth E. Carter and Avengers: Infinity War’s Judianna Makovsky will do battle for the Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film honour. Aquaman’s Kym Barrett, Paco Delgado for A Wrinkle in Time, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ Jenny Beavan will also compete in that race.
In the TV field, Lou Eyrich and Allison Leach are shortlisted for Excellence in Contemporary Television for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, as are Sharp Objects’ Alix Friedberg, and This Is Us’ Hala Bahmet.
Excellence in Period Television features contenders like Donna Zakowska for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Outlander’s Nina Ayres and Terry Dresbach, and the nods for Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Television award include Ane Crabtree for The Handmaid’s Tale, and Westworld’s Sharen Davis.
There was also cause for celebration for Natasha Newman-Thomas for her work on Childish Gambino’s music video for This Is America, and Ami Goodhart for Justin Timberlake’s Supplies promo, which are both recognised for Excellence in Short Form Design.
The winners of the 21st annual CDGAs, honouring the best in costume design, will be unveiled during a ceremony in Beverly Hills, California on 19 February (19).
