Behind every great filmmaker is a great editor. Sally Menke, who passed away earlier this week, was Quentin Tarantino’s cutter and was nominated for an Academy Award twice for her work on Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds. Editing is a subtle craft. The best makes you think it’s not there and can bring more to a film than camera technique, sound design and acting. Her distinct, brisk technique complemented Tarantino’s brash and lengthy scenes. She was a major force in his and its safe to say that his films won’t be the same without her.
