We all adore Disney’s The Jungle Book, the heartwarming and adventurous story of Mowgli, the man-cub who lives in the Indian jungle with his wolf pack and goes on a journey to escape the wrath of the evil tiger, Shere Khan. However, it seems that the timeless Disney classic might have a bit of a deeper meaning than we originally thought. According to Reddit user manderine11, each of the various main characters in the film represents one of the seven deadly sins.
manderine11 says as follows,
Shere Khan represents Wrath
This is obvious, the tiger is after Mowgli for the wrongs he felt the man cub’s father did to him and he is ready to seek his revenge.
Baloo represents Gluttony
All Baloo does is eat and lay around. (Not that we could blame him. It sounds like the good life to us.)
Colonel Hathi represents Pride
Hathi is known as “The True Master of The Jungle” and is super prideful when it comes to his herd.
Kaa represents Lust
The snake Kaa uses her voice and eyes to seduce Mowgli even though she actually wants to eat him, she uses her powers and scaley body to first reign him in.
King Louie represents Greed
King Louie the orangutan is obsessed with power, gold and most importantly, human fire. Though he’s already the king of the jungle he is still desperate for fire making him greedy AF.
For manderine11, Sloth and Envy are the hardest sins to match with the characters of The Jungle Book, but they decide that:
Bagheera represents Soth
The panther is always serious especially in the face of Baloo who is always giddy and delighted. The definition of sloth is as follows, “Sadness, depression, or the inability to feel joy.” It’s clear that Bagheera is a worry wart especially when it comes to Mowgli’s safety.
Mowgli represents Envy
This was also a difficult match, but all the man cub wants is to be like the animals of the jungle. He doesn’t want to be “special” or treated as an outcast which makes him envious of his wolf siblings.
