American Pop | 1981
The story of four generations of a family of Russian Jewish immigrant musicians. The first to immigrate to America is Louis, a song-and-dance man who fathers Benny. Benny becomes a jazz pianist, who is killed in World War II, after fathering Tony. The sullen young Tony leaves Brooklyn to write music for an acid rock band in San Francisco, but misses his big chance and becomes a junkie in New York during the 1970s. Tony's illegitimate son Pete winds up taking care of his father, living with him on the street, and making some money playing the guitar, which Tony uses to buy drugs. When Tony gives Pete Benny's harmonica, he eventually becomes such a good player that is signed to a recording contract.
