Andrew Garfield Questions Spider-Man’s Sexuality: ‘Why Can’t He Be Gay?’

In the latest reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, Andrew Garfield has captivated audiences and captured our hearts as titular superhero. But in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Amazing Spider-Man actor posited a question about good ol’ Spidey that we’ve never before considered: “Why can’t he be gay?”

The source of this question was a discussion Garfield had with the film’s producer Matt Tolmach regarding the character of MJ. While “MJ” is traditionally understood to stand for Spider-Man’s longtime love Mary-Jane, Garfield offered up a different opinion on the matter.

“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” he told EW. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

In the spirit of this summer’s SCOTUS rulings and NYC’s recent Pride Parade, we applaud Garfield’s attitude and are happy to give his question some thought. Maybe Spidey is gay, or maybe he is decidedly straight. Or maybe he’s just open to exploring his sexuality as a tolerant, forward-thinking adult of the 21st century. The main point that Garfield is trying to make: any of these can, and should, be accepted as possible developments for the character, and met with open, web-slinging arms.
