In seventeenth-century France, beautiful and rebellious Angélique, is forced by her poor father to marry Count Joffrey de Peyrac, a rich, older man rumored to be as rich as Louis XIV. Peyrac, who is disfigured and crippled from an accident during his youth, made his fortune with a gold mining operation using a new technique to extract the precious metal. His opponents claim he practices alchemy. Initially, Angélique resents her marriage to Joffrey, but she comes to admire the man and gradually falls in love with him. Having witnessed a plot to overthrow the king, Angélique is targeted by the conspirators. When Joffrey comes to her rescue, Peyrac is accused of witchcraft and Angélique goes to Paris in order to organize his defense.
