At the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, Mike Cahill walked away with the perfect package for his film Another Earth. The director’s narrative debut won the Sloan Feature Film Prize for features focused on science, a Special Jury Prize from the festival, a distribution deal through Fox Searchlight, and a heap of buzz surrounding  the indie world’s new favorite actress, Brit Marling. The film hit theaters in July of 2011, and since then, fans of the film have been wondering what Cahill would tackle next.

A casting call now reveals that Cahill is knee deep on his next feature, currently titled i Origins, a film that will see the director mine the emotional side of science. Hollywood.com has confirmed that production company Verisimilitude (Half Nelson and the upcoming The Place Beyond The Pines) and Another Earth and Terri producer Phaedon Papadopoulos are behind the project, which will shoot in New York City. Calleri Casting’s call reveals a short synopsis for the film:

This film, a second feature from award-winning, breakout filmmaker Mike Cahill (Another Earth) connects the lives of the most unlikely people from around the globe. One doctor, on the brink of a scientific discovery which will have historical ramifications, travels to India to search for the one person, a young Indian girl, who can prove or disprove his theory. The story follows the incredible journeys that bring these strangers together, and proves there is no separating matters of science and matters of the heart.

The casting agents are currently looking to cast “Salomina,” an “impoverished Indian girl living in Delhi” described as, “very sweet, very smart, slightly feral (a beautiful wild child). Deeply soulful and compelling. Once a frequent visitor at the Save the Children community center, she now works as a maid after the death of her mother and her father’s descent into addiction.”

Hollywood.com reached out to Papadopoulos for confirmation on the film’s start date, but comment was not immediately available.

Cahill’s Another Earth was an ambitious project that dabbled with special effects to pay off its emotional twists and turns. i Origins sounds equally bold and zealous, and with casting underway, it sounds like the pieces are falling in to place for Cahill to realize his new vision.
