Aronofsky’s ‘Noah’ Brightens Up with ‘Perks’ and ‘LOL’ Stars

ALTAs angsty as teen angst might be, it’s still not quite on the same level of severity as your standard biblical flood. That said, the newcomers to Darren Aronofsky‘s epic Noah will be taking on challenges far and beyond taming their own manic pixie dream girls: Deadline reports that The Perks of Being a Wallflower star Logan Lerman and LOL‘s Douglas Booth are signed on to play the fabled ark captain’s (Russell Crowe) two sons — Ham and Shem, respectively.

Lerman isn’t exactly a stranger to some pretty grave situations. He has battled lightning thieves, joined the musketeers, taken a 3:10 to Yuma, ridden in cars with boys, and met Bill. That said, this is Darren Aronofsky we’re talking about. The man gave the world completely new reasons to be terrified of ballet, and probably the only person who has ever successfully conveyed the message to teenagers that drugs are not cool. The man goes dark — darker than Logan has yet to go.

Douglas Booth’s resume is thinner than Lerman’s, but he’s also got a fair variety under his belt. The young British actor has already appeared in the four mainstays of the United Kingdom’s cinema: fantasy, horror, Dickens adaptation, and Boy George biopic. His most recent release was LOL (the “Miley Cyrus smoking pot” movie) in which he played one point in a high school love triangle.

Neither of Noah‘s two new actors is exclusively associated with the “teen angst” genre. But all factors involved — their most prevlanet projects at this time, and their simultaneous casting, especially compared to the other figures involved (Aronofsky, Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, and Saoirse Ronan) — make it hard not to stir up what are likely unnecessary connotations. Aronofsky is not turning his Noah into The Perks of Being a Prophet’s Son. He’s turning these two young men into the versatile performers they have the potential to be. Two by two.
