Last week (ends15Jan10), the film replaced Star Wars as the third biggest blockbuster, but Entertainment Weekly boffins have crunched the numbers and James Cameron’s Golden Globe-winning epic doesn’t even make the top 30 if you take financial history into consideration.
Avatar has made over $510 million (£319 million) at the U.S. box office – only a third of what Gone With The Wind would have pulled in if that film had been released in 2009.
The classic movie beats Star Wars, The Sound of Music and E.T. – the only films that broke $1 billion in America, if inflation and ticket prices are considered.
