Best movies and TV shows to watch with your mom this Mother’s Day

If you can’t go out, then spend the night in with your mom, or any mother figure watching these feel-good movies and TV shows!

Movie night, anyone? (Or television binge-watching, if you prefer)

It may not be 100% possible to get a reservation at mom’s favorite restaurant. But why not suggest a day or night in your pajamas (who knows? Maybe you’ll want to dress up! It’s up to you!) watching movies or TV shows. Whether you’re dressing up to head to the couch, or just being couch potatoes in animal onesies, these are the best Mother’s Day movies and TV shows to watch.

Best Mother’s Day movies & TV shows: Julie & Julia

A 2009 Oscar-nominated movie, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams star in this feel-good (and hunger-inducing) film about a jaded New Yorker, Julie Powell, in her life-altering vow to create all of the recipes in Julia Child’s cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Meanwhile, the famous cooking connoisseur herself, Julia Child, is doing her best to master the art of French cuisine. This film is perfect if you can’t get a reservation at your favorite French restaurant and is available on Netflix. You’ll want to cook something at home after watching this movie so bring out the cookbooks in advance!

Best Mother’s Day movies & TV shows: Wine Country

Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, and Tina Fey bring you the savory tastes of wine from Napa Valley, California straight through your screen. Maybe you and mom can invest in a bottle of wine of her choice before watching this Netflix comedy. (You really can’t beat any of the comedic, rockstar women in this film — just saying.) Moreover, six friends gear up for a birthday getaway to the wine capital of America. Things do get messy, only to have the friends question everything about their life choices.

Best Mother’s Day movies & TV shows: The Suffragette

If you and your mom are history buffs, then this movie is for you two! Enjoy the historic tale of the suffragettes’ movement in Britain, where Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep as Maud Watts and Emmeline Pankhurst, respectively, along with other suffragettes risk everything that they have for a cause: Women’s Rights. This British independent film is available to watch on Netflix

Best Mother’s Day movies & TV shows: Gilmore Girls

Join Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham in this classic television show (streaming on Netflix) and throughout the eccentric-with-a-mix-of-somewhat-normal characters of Stars Hollow, Connecticut at Luke’s Diner, town hall meetings, Chilton High School, the Dragonfly Inn, and dinners with Rory’s grandparents, Richard and Emily (Edward Herrmann and Kelly Bishop). In season four, follow Rory (Bledel) to Yale University for her college career alongside her former high school nemesis, Paris (Liza Weil) turned best friend. We recap the 10 weirdest events that happen in Gilmore Girls – remember these?!

Best Mother’s Day movies & TV shows: Ginny & Georgia

A modern-day Gilmore Girls and a definite much-watch for fans of Pretty Little Liars, this thrilling (with some of the best one-liners you will ever hear) is bound to keep you on your toes, laughing out loud, and snapping in response to Ginny’s quick and witty comebacks when faced with progressive, social issues of 2021. Antonia Gentry and Brianne Howey star as the mother-daughter duo. Diesel La Torraca portrays Ginny’s younger brother, Austin.

The Netflix series follows the family to the fictional town of Wellsbury, Massachusetts as Georgia (Brianne Howey ) keeps running away from her tumultuous and traumatic past, only to be resurfaced by her flashbacks and characters you will just have to meet along the way. Only season 1 is available on Netflix, with season 2 in the making. That leaves room to watch even more Ginny and Georgia after Mother’s Day!

There’s always something suitable for any mother-and-child(ren) group. So, don’t just buy your mom a piece of jewelry or handbag, but also treat her to something special that you’ll both/all enjoy as a family! Don’t forget to tell your mother how grateful you are to her each and every day — not just on Mother’s Day. If you can, celebrate your godmothers, aunts, grandmothers, and who knows? Maybe your sister or cousin happens to be a mother! Celebrate them, too! We all have so much to be grateful for, even after the year we’ve had.
