Moviegoers opted for pre-Halloween scares this Labor Day weekend. Rob Zombie’s prequel-remake of the 1978 John Carpenter classic opened at No. 1 at the North American box office with a four-day total of $31 million.
The re-imagined Halloween now stands as the best Labor Day weekend opener ever, surpassing record holder Transporter 2, which debuted in 2005 with $20.1 million. Halloween’s impressive numbers also helped to push the overall summer totals to over $4 billion.
“Halloween was far beyond anything we’ve seen on Labor Day,” Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers told The Associated Press. “It was just a perfect ending to a perfect summer. Hopefully, we can do this every year.”
The comedy Balls of Fury, about a washed-up pingpong player recruited by the feds to help bring down a criminal mastermind (Christopher Walken), opened in third place with a four-day total of $14.3 million, while the crime drama Death Sentence, starring Kevin Bacon, debuted at No. 8 with $5.2 million.
The Top 12 movies took in a four-day total of $120 million, up 21.68 percent from last year’s total of $98.6 million and up 9.24 percent from last weekend’s total of $88.8 million.
