Mission accomplished for Tom Cruise. The megastar’s new megamovie “M:I-2” made megabucks, grossing $71.8 million for the four-day holiday weekend, per estimates released today.
According to box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations, the opening is the second-biggest ever for Memorial Day weekend, behind only “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” which took in $90.2 million in 1997.
Since bowing Wednesday, “M:I-2” has grossed an overall $90.8 million.
Amazingly, after Cruise was through with the buying public, there were enough dollars to go around to some other films, too. Last week’s No. 1 “Dinosaur” bore up well, bringing in another $33.5 million for the Friday through Monday period. The Jackie Chan actioner “Shanghai Noon” — which opened to great reviews — opened in theaters to so-so business, bowing in the third spot with an estimated $19.5 million.
Elsewhere, Top Five holdovers “Gladiator” ($17.3 million) and “Road Trip” ($14 million) were the other films to crack the eight-figure mark.
