This movie has taken a while, to say the least.
Announced back in 2016, started shooting in 2017, scheduled for December 2018, pushed to January 2019, then pushed back to May 24, THEN after the Disney acquisition of Fox, the final hopefully) release date will be September 2019.
So what is it?
Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) looked to the stars because of his father Clifford (Tommy Lee Jones). While on a spacewalk disaster strikes and he wakes in a hospital. When he wakes with his wife (Liv Tyler, who else could be left behind while someone goes to space) tells him of the surge, and the army wants him to find his thought to be lost father’s space mission. McBride must go to find him and find out what happened up there, no matter what the cost.
The trailer feels pretty generic, but that could be the point. Director James Gray has called this film a mix between 2001 and Apocalypse Now, two great films but if the people cutting the trailer wanted to make it simple to get people in seats, that would explain it.
I’m cautiously optimistic about this one, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
‘Ad Astra’ releases on September 20, 2019.
