Bright Star to fade away from Broadway

Steve Martin’s musical Bright Star is set to close on Broadway.
Just two days after going home empty-handed at the 2016 Tony Awards, producers of the show announced on Tuesday (14Jun16) that the cast will play its final performance on 26 June (16).
The bluegrass musical, which was written by the comedian and his frequent collaborator Edie Brickell, began previews in February (16) and received mixed reviews.
Box office sales weren’t as high as the duo had hoped, and it was recently reported that the pair, along with Brickell’s husband Paul Simon, poured in more than $1 million of their personal funds to help Bright Star keep shining.
The trio and the rest of the show’s producers aimed to keep the show afloat until Sunday’s (12Jun16) Tonys, in hopes the cast’s live performance and possible wins would boost sales.
However, Bright Star lost all five categories it was nominated in, including Best Musical. Four of the Tonys went to blockbuster Hamilton, which took home an impressive 11 gongs.
