It’s like everything good in the world of contemporary film mixed with what’s worst about it. Cameron Diaz has joined the cast of Gambit which already has Colin Firth attached to star. Here’s the good news: Colin Firth! Yay! Everyone loves the doughy Englishman. The script was written by Joel and Ethan Coen! Yay! Everyone loves everything they do, man. The film is being directed by Michael Hoffman! Yay! I really enjoyed his take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Here’s the bad news: Cameron Diaz! Boo! The only good thing she has been in recently was being named dropped in that Community Spanish rap. Besides that? Nothing. Well, she’s in Bad Teacher coming out this year and that sounds pretty cool, so maybe that will swing things back around her way. Whatever it takes to make us forget about Knight and Day.
Anyway, the film, a remake of the 1967 caper with Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, follows Firth as a con man (gee, that’s a shocker considering the title) who tries to get an old guy to buy a fake Monet. Diaz will play his sexy accomplice. Look, I’m all for this picutre. I love con movies and I do have a soft spot in my heart for the softy Colin Firth. Hopefully the filmmakers can overcome the incredible obstacle they have given themselves and make a decent movie despite the fact that Cameron Diaz is in it.
