She is kept by the wealthy and powerful Baron de Varville, but after years of her rich lifestyle she falls in love with Armand, a man of more limited means. The two plan a life together, but Armand's father begs Camille to leave his son, knowing her past could cause a scandal. She agrees, and finds herself alone and suffering from tuberculosis.
