I Love Lucy fans rejoice! There will finally be a Hollywood-style Lucille Ball biopic, and from the lead casting choice alone, it’s going to be epic. Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett will star as the iconic actress, who changed the game for women in comedy and on television. From Blanchett’s past roles in films like Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, where she played the controversial 16th century English Queen, the regal actress will surely do the role justice.
Bipoics are often very difficult films to make. Accurately portraying a historical figure while trying to really examine who they were as a person can be a harrowing task. However, when these films are done properly, they not only pay homage to the people that they are depicting, but they also keep audiences and fans riveted, giving them a more intimate look into the subject’s accomplishments, goals and dreams. This summer’s N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton is a testament to what biographically based films can do with proper casting and backing.

Though there have been two TV films about Lucille Ball’s life, this one starring Blanchett, will be produced by the late star’s two children; Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. Written by acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (whose latest bipoic Steve Jobs starring Michael Fassbender is already getting a ton of buzz), the film will follow Ball’s life throughout her twenty-year marriage to her I Love Lucy co-star Desi Arnaz. Though there aren’t many more details floating around about the project as of yet, it’s probably safe to say that Cate Blanchett can look forward to another Oscar nod in her future.
Blanchett’s latest film Carol will be released November 20th.
