Champions scores Best Picture at Goya Awards as The Realm dominates

Spanish sports comedy Champions and political thriller The Realm were the big winners at the 2019 Goya Awards on Saturday (02Feb19).
Champions, from director Javier Fesser, was chosen as Best Picture, but lost out on the majority of its 10 nominations, only picking up additional wins for Best Breakthrough Actor for Jesus Vidal, and Best Song for Coque Malla’s Este es el momento (This is the Moment).
The Realm, which had been the most-nominated heading into the ceremony in Seville, Spain with 13 nods, dominated the rest of the categories, scoring seven prizes, including Best Picture, Best Director for Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Best Actor for Antonio de la Torre, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
Meanwhile, Susi Sanchez was recognised as Best Actress for Sunday’s Ills, topping a category which included Penelope Cruz for Everybody Knows, and the Best Animated Feature title went to Another Day of Life.
Supporting actor and actress honours were awarded to Luis Zahera for The Realm and Carolina Yuste for Carmen & Lola, respectively, while Pawel Pawlikowsky’s Cold War landed Best European Picture, and Alfonso Cuaron’s Oscars favourite, Roma, was declared best Foreign Spanish-Language Film.
There was also an honorary prize for veteran actor and filmmaker Narciso Ibanez Serrador as he was celebrated for his career achievements at the Spainish version of the Oscars.
