Christian BaleUPDATE: Director Scott Cooper is looking to cast Viggo Mortensen in the role of the villain, and the target of Bale’s character’s quest, in the film. To play Bale’s ill-fated brother, Cooper is considering Channing Tatum, Taylor Kitsch, Casey Affleck and Garrett Hedlund. It is also reported that the role intended for Duvall will be that of Bale’s uncle, who acts as a figure of guidance to his troubled nephew. –Variety

EARLIER: You can take the Gotham out of the man, but you can’t take the man out of the furnace. Is that the saying? Either way, it applies: this generation’s Batman Christian Bale is in talks to star in Out of the Furnace, a revenge drama being directed by Scott Cooper, the man behind Crazy Heart. Interestingly  Also being considered for a role is every generation’s everything Robert Duvall, who appeared briefly in Crazy Heart opposite Jeff Bridges.

Out of the Furnace was formerly titled The Low Dweller, and looks to star Bale as an ex-inmate who sets out on a quest to avenge the murder of his younger brother. Dark antihero with a revenge quest? Sounds right up Bale’s alley. And if Duvall does come on board, any role in this sort of film should suit him just fine. This will be the first time Bale and Duvall have worked together since 1992’s musical classic Newsies. So logic allows that Out of the Furnace will be EXACTLY like that.
