Dark Knight Rises ReviewYesterday, Twitter and Facebook exploded with early reviews of The Dark Knight Rises after an early screening for a few dozen lucky critics. And let’s just say the response was nothing short of spectacular.

There were tears (yes, actual human tears filled with pure geek joy), cheers and a standing ovation.

The Dark Knight Rises has just finished screening for the press and critics, receiving a STANDING OVATION!!!,” film reviewer Lauren Hiestand wrote, according to Comic Book Movie.

And Oscar talk was even floating around in the ether. Critic Marco Gennuso, gushed, “If this does not break the mold and win Best Picture, no comic book movie ever will #TDKR.”

But could it really happen? The Academy has historically frowned upon superhero movies and action flicks. Director/co-writer Christopher Nolan has been nominated three times (once for Memento and twice for Inception).

And Batman himself, Christian Bale, won his first Oscar last year for his brilliant performance in The Fighter

Plus, the Academy has started to loosen up its outlook on major box office blockbusters (Avatar and Toy Story 3 were both nominated for Best Picture, after all).

But if Dark Knight performs as expected and breaks, say, the $1 billion mark like The Avengers, does it even matter?
