David O. Russell To Direct ‘Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’

David O. RussellAs The AV Club so eloquently put it, David O. Russell has chosen video game adaptation Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune as “the next project he will likely abandon when things get too complicated.” Couldn’t have said it better myself, so I didn’t even bother.

Russell recently left the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and as an uncovered behind the scenes meltdown on the set of I Heart Huckabees shows, he seems to be rather difficult to work with. Will this stop the adaptation of Uncharted? Not at all, as its a priority for Sony Pictures. Russell is signed on to rewrite the script so his work might be evident in the final product even if he decides to leave the film.

As the comments on the article on Deadline suggest, a leading candidate to play the character Drake is Nathan Fillion. I, personally, think of this as an incredible choice. Fillion is a phenomenal actor and needs more/better roles. He’s a sci-fi/genre star and is perfectly capable of handling the lighter and darker moments of this adventure. He tweeted a link to the story expressing his interest in the film, which probably resulted in the massive amounts of comments on the site. He would certainly rock the treasure hunting socks off this role, but Russell’s frequent collaborator Mark Wahlberg may have the upper hand as he’s already made three films with the hot-headed filmmaker and boasts a box-office friendly resume that Fillion sadly doesn’t have. We’ll keep you updated with more information as it becomes available.
