The Wachowskis (The Matrix, V For Vendetta) have got a controversial, groundbreaking script that they’re trying to keep under wraps – which isn’t really that surprising if you think about it. The clandestine project is called Cobalt Neural 9, but before you wear yourself out trying to dig up the meaning behind it, don’t. The name is just enigmatic nonsense chosen to create buzz and confusion around the project – and word has it the duo is planning to change it soon anyway.
Thanks to New York Magazine, whose “spies” managed to get a peek at the secret script, we now know the plot and it makes sense that the Wachowskis are trying to drum up some buzz. From the looks of the newfound details of the contentious storyline it seems like it may be difficult to nab a studio production deal, so it makes sense that the brothers would try to create interest by getting as many people talking about the script as possible. And nothing gets people talking like a big ol’ secret.
The story takes place in the future, but follows the digital excavation of the life of a gay American marine in Iraq via “found footage” from news organizations and other digital media. He’s young, handsome, and incredibly violent – that is, until he falls in love with an Iraqi militant. According to the NY Mag spies, the script includes a radically graphic sex scene in which the duo don burqas and the lovers’ plot to “end the evil” by attempting to assassinate then-President George W. Bush during one of his visits to Iraq. Sarah Palin’s going to have field day when she hears about this.
And it’s no wonder they’re worried about getting a studio to back the incendiary project; it’s a tough plot to sell. Even so, they’ve got plenty of their own money to make it themselves and I’m sure they’ll figure out a way to get the film onto the silver screen. I’ll be keeping my ear to the ground on this one, but this recent breach of security seems to have caused the brothers to up the ante. They’re already taking steps to keep any more details from surfacing, but luckily for them these leaked details are sure to create even more demand for their radical project.
