For anyone who’s a fan of ’90s nostalgia and funky — but durable and comfy — boots, Dr. Martens has collaborated with Nickelodeon to release the literal coolest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles swag we’ve seen.
The shoes are inspired by the original 1987 series but launched in promotion with the turtles’ new film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
Seriously, how cool are they? They come in men’s, women’s and kid’s sizes.
Unfortunately for the turtles, these shoes might be cooler than the actual film. Out Of The Shadows was produced by Michael Bay, a master at franchise sequels, but it hasn’t fared as well in the box office as its previous films.
According to The New York Times, Out Of The Shadows cost a whopping $135 million to make and another $100 to promote, but only took in an estimated $35.5 million in the box office during its first weekend. For comparison, the previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles release pulled in $65.6 million in the first three days. Still, despite the film’s low return, it was rated much more positively than its predecessor getting an A- in CinemaScore exit polls.
Paramount Pictures is hoping word of mouth and school recesses will help push the film into some serious money making territory. It has fared better than a few major movies currently in the box office. X-Men: Apocalypse took in $22.3 million and Andy Samberg’s Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping took in a mere $4.6 million. If TMNT doesn’t make back its losses, at least Paramount has some cool shoes.
The Dr. Martens limited edition Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line is available on the retailer’s website.
