Duncan Jones May Direct ‘The Wolverine’

Duncan JonesYoung filmmakers usually have a much harder time breaking on to Hollywood’s hot list, but Duncan Jones is making it all look easy. His first feature, the indie sci-fi mind-bender Moon, was very well received by critics and made back its negative cost during its theatrical run, prompting Summit Entertainment to snatch up the director to helm its own sci-fi thriller Source Code. That film is currently on course to turn profit before next weekend, but Jones isn’t waiting on box office numbers to book his next gig. The director is fielding a few offers and taking meetings all over Tinsel Town, chief amongst them with 20th Century Fox about its fledgling Wolverine project.

Darren Aronofsky was to helm a standalone X-Men spin-off titled simply The Wolverine but left the project in limbo when he departed due to family issues. The Hugh Jackman film is a high-priority project for Fox, which still wants to release it in the summer of 2012, but needs a director signed ASAP to meet that deadline. If Duncan Jones does take the job, he’d begin working on it immediately and it doesn’t sound like he’d mind the quick production pace at all.

“Who knows what’ll be coming up next”, Jones told IGN. “I have a lot of meetings and catching-up to do when I get back to LA. The Wolverine is more interesting to me than Batman. A good Wolverine film could be an amazing thing.” Well said, Duncan, if executed properly. Though he’s still fresh blood on the grand scale, Jones is building a good rep quick and is a genre enthusiast, making him an ideal candidate to helm The Wolverine. Word on the official hire is expected soon, so stay tuned.
