Easy Rider bike sold at auction amid controversy

A customised Harley-Davidson motorbike wrecked in the final scene of classic 1969 film Easy Rider and lovingly restored by actor Dan Haggerty has been snapped up at auction for over $1.3 million (£812,000). Bosses at California auction house Profiles in History oversaw the sale, which was caught up in controversy amid claims the bike was not the real thing.
A Texas-based collector claimed he owns the chopper from the film, insisting he has a certificate of authenticity from Haggerty, who briefly appeared in the film.
The Grizzly Adams star previously told the Los Angeles Times that he had authenticated and sold two Captain America bikes from the film, but he insisted only of them was genuine, and that belonged to California realtor Michael Eisenberg, who sold his through Profiles in History on Saturday (18Oct14).
Actor Peter Fonda, who rode the bike in Easy Rider, tells the Times, “There’s a big rat stinking someplace in this. I can’t tell you which one (bike) is real; I know there are two bikes out there that are both authenticated by Haggerty. That’s not right.”
