Everything You Need To Know About Aquawoman aka Mera For ‘Justice League’

DC Comics recently released Amber Heard’s new look as Mera a.k.a. Aquawoman and she looks absolutely badass! Now, Mera may not be as well known as Wonder Woman, but she’s still quite a force to be reckoned with. Still, that doesn’t change the fact that not many people may know who Mera is, where she came from, or what her powers and weaknesses are but never fear! Read on because we got you covered on everything you need to know about Mera for Justice League.

Who is Mera?

DC Entertainment

Mera a.k.a. Aquawoman is the Queen of Atlantis and the wife of Aquaman a.k.a. Arthur Curry. (He’s being played by Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa in the upcoming Justice League film.) If you thought she was a trophy wife, think again!

Mera’s Origins

DC Entertainment

Before Mera became the Queen of Atlantis, she was once the Queen of a place outside of Earth’s dimension named Dimension Aqua (formally called Xebel). However, she fled from her home after a criminal named Leron seized control of her kingdom and exiled her.

She arrived in Earth’s dimension and met Aquaman who aided her in her quest to save her kingdom. After successfully taking back her throne with the help of Aquaman, Mera decided to return to Atlantis to marry Aquaman and become Queen of Atlantis. Soon after, they had a son whom they named Arthur Curry Jr. a.k.a. Aquababy (yes, that’s really the name they gave him).

Tragedy Strikes!

DC Entertainment

About two years later, Aquababy was kidnapped by Aquaman’s archenemy Black Manta who trapped the child inside a tank filled with poison. As a result, Aquababy lapsed into a coma and Mera journeyed back to her home dimension to find a special healing device. Although she was successful in finding it, she returned too late and found that her child had died.

As a result, Mera suffered a nervous breakdown and blamed Aquaman for his “weak genes”. She believed that her son would have been able to survive Black Manta’s attack if he had been born of a man from her home dimension. Mera abandoned Aquaman and their marriage was no more. Aquaman later tried to make peace with Mera but was unsuccessful and she eventually returned to Dimension Aqua.

Powers and Abilities

DC Entertainment

Mera has the classic superhero power package of Super Strength and Durability. In addition she can breathe underwater and has exceptional swimming capabilities. She also has a limited degree of telepathy that allows her to communicate with other Atlanteans but she is not as powerful as Aquaman in this regard.

Her signature ability is Hydrokinesis which allows her to increase the density of water within her immediate vicinity. She can create “hard water” objects such as swords to wield or water missiles to launch at enemies. She is also able to control massive amounts of water to pull an entire army out to sea.

Weaknesses

DC Entertainment

Mera has a vulnerability to lead which can cause her to lose her Hydrokinesis powers. However, her main weakness is her mental instability that she suffered after the death of her son Aquababy at the hands of Black Manta. Whether or not this will player a factor in Justice League is too early to tell.

Justice League is set to premiere in theaters November 17, 2017.
