The Hollywood club Johnny Depp once co-owned is facing closure as the new bosses plan to build luxury apartments on the site.
The fabled Viper Room, where actor River Phoenix died from an overdose in 1993, has been sold as part of a four-property Sunset Boulevard acquisition by bosses at Arizona-based 8850 Sunset LLC.
The new buyers are still deciding what to do with the club, but it looks likely it will be demolished to make way for high-cost living space.
The Viper Room opened in the 1940s as jazz spot the Melody Room. It was renamed the Viper Room in 1993.
Depp became a co-owner in the late 1990s but passed on his share to his former business partner Anthony Fox’s daughter in 2004. Harry Morton, the son of Hard Rock Cafe founder Peter Morton took over the place in 2008.
