Fiddler on the Roof writer dies

Stein passed away at a medical centre in Manhattan on Sunday (24Oct10) after suffering complications from a fall. He had also been battling prostate cancer, reports the Associated Press.

His greatest success came after transforming a short story into the hit Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof, for which he won two Tony Awards. He also had a hand in adapting the production for the big screen.

Stein wrote the storylines for several other musicals, including Zorba, Mr. Wonderful and Plain and Fancy.

He is survived by his wife, Elisa Stein.
