Mixed martial arts icon Kimbo Slice has died, aged 42.
The tough-as-nails fighter, real name Kevin Ferguson, was hospitalised on Monday (06Jun16) in Coral Springs, Florida and died hours later.
The details surrounding his passing are unclear, but Carla Kmiotek, a Coral Springs Police sergeant, said there was no foul play suspected.
Kimbo last fought in February (16) when he took on Dada 5000 at the Bellator 149 event. Slice won the fight but his victory was overturned after he tested positive for a banned steroid.
His next appearance was due to be at MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) event Bellator 158 in London, England, next month (Jul16). Following his passing, Bellator MMA president Scott Coker released a statement which read: “We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating and untimely loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family.
“One of the most popular MMA fighters ever, Kimbo was a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport. Outside the cage he was a friendly, gentle giant and a devoted family man.
“His loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family and all of Kimbo’s friends, fans, and teammates.”
Slice became an Internet sensation over a decade ago when his backyard fighting videos went viral. He later signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
