For Americans, the battle of Dunkirk isn’t exactly taught in schools.
During World War II, specifically May of 1940, German troops advanced into France and trapped the Allied soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk. The troops had to evacuate and using whatever ship they could find, 330,000 troops were successfully evacuated and Dunkirk was considered a turning point in the war.
Director Christopher Nolan is arguably one of the best Directors of our time, and this will be his first war film. Past films include mind benders like Inception Memento, Interstellar and of course the Batman trilogy, but this will be his first historic film. Also coming to film for the first time is Ex One Directioner Harry Styles. Styles fans aren’t too happy with the scene of him drowning in the trailer (about 2 minutes in), but they’ll have to actually watch the film to find out why he happens to be there. The film also features roles from Nolan Alums Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, as well as Oscar winner Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh.
Dunkirk releases on July 21, 2017.
