French film censors defend Fifty Shades of Grey rating

Film censors in France have defended their decision to allow children as young as 12 to watch erotic blockbuster Fifty Shades Of Grey. The film adaptation of E.L. James’ book, starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, hits cinemas across the world this week (beg09Feb15), and it has been given a tough 18 rating in Britain for its kinky sex scenes, while teenagers under that age in America will have to be accompanied by an adult.
The film has also been banned by countries including Malaysia and Kenya, but film censors at France’s Centre National du Cinema (CNC) have decided to give the movie a more relaxed rating which allows children as young as 12 into cinemas to see it.
The decision has caused controversy, but Jean-François Mary, president of the CNC’s classification commission, has defended the move and insists the film is not as shocking as many expect, telling Premiere.fr, “The committee was divided, but a majority were in favour of the 12 (rating)… This is not a film that, in my opinion, can shock a lot of people… It’s really a romance… (Johnson’s lead female character is) not at all in a submissive position.”
