Sometimes it’s re-teaming that can make the hearts of moviegoers grow fonder. From Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn and Doris Day and Rock Hudson to Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, audiences love movie couples. Even if the actors are playing different characters in subsequent pairings, just seeing the two of them onscreen is like visiting old friends. It’s easy to take comfort in a dynamic you’ve seen play out before.
And, of course, that’s a defining part of Gangster Squad‘s appeal. This is the first time Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have appeared together in a movie since they grooved to Bill Medley in 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love. Based on the trailers, their chemistry once again seems electric. Certainly it’s a selling point for Warner Bros., which had to push back the gun violence-heavy Gangster Squad in the wake of the Aurora, Colo., shooting last July and once again faces a gun-wary audience. Can Gosling and Stone recapture their onscreen magic for our fun and Warner Bros.’ profit? We’ll see. But they find themselves in good company in our gallery of 12 Frequent Movie couples.
