‘Annihilation’ had me excited since the first trailer.
First, off it’s directed by Alex Garland, who directed Ex-Machina, which was kind of a surprise hit for me. People raved about the book series of Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer so much it got me to just buy the books to read. Lastly, I was so lost in the trailer that I had to see it.
One thing that I didn’t realize is the actors. The people going into Area X are Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Tuva Novotny. Notice, there are no men going. It’s so rare and kind of refreshing to see these rolls go to some bad ass ladies instead of the same generic men.
In the above interview, go behind the scenes of ‘Annihilation’ and hear from Director Alex Garland about why he likes directing science fiction, Author Jeff VanderMeer got excited how this film was what he pictured when writing the book, Oscar Isaac goes into Alex’s directing style, and then the ladies tell us about the film. Tessa Thompson talks about when she realized how cool it was that the film was all ladies, Jennifer Jason Leigh discusses working with the women, Tuva Novotny tells us about working with practical effects, Gina Rodriguez dives into what this film could mean for the future of women in film, and Natalie Portman goes into what the film’s title actually says about the film.
‘Annihilation’ releases February 23, 2018.
