As you may have noticed, people are pretty into food again. The lengthy food-phobic hiatus following the 1950s steak-and-eggs-for-breakfast era has ended. People have stopped being ashamed of their extensive appetites. It’s cool to be a big eater again. This is evident both by the influx in Food Network fandom, and by the wave of Hollywood features actually based off cookbooks or food-related memoirs. The latest addition to the bunch is Blood, Bones & Butter, an autobiographical book by chef/writer Gabrielle Hamilton. A book like this, regardless of its magnificent prose, would not likely have found screen adaptation in a prior decade; whereas now, it is not only getting one, but is reportedly attracting a big star to play the lead: Gwyneth Paltrow.
And this sort of act is old hat now. In 2010, biggest-star-ever Julia Roberts took on the central role in Eat, Pray, Love, based on the Elizabeth Gilbert memoir of the same name. The year prior, acting icon Meryl Streep played cooking icon Julie Andrews in Julie & Julia, opposite the rapidly rising name of Amy Adams. So, to reiterate, really liking food is in.
Paltrow, whom The Hollywood Reporter reveals is in negotiations to headline Blood, Bones & Butter, has a leg up on her contemporaries. In 2008, the actress kicked off her online newsletter Goop: a celebration of life’s pleasantries — the “Make” section of the website is dedicated to the joys Paltrow finds in cooking and eating. In 2011, Paltrow published her own cookbook, My Father’s Daughter.
Blood, Bones & Butter, which has been called, “The best memoir by a chef ever. Ever,” by celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, details author Hamilton’s eventful life through the many kitchens in which she has worked.
