Harrison Ford Might Be Joining Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’ Remake (UPDATED)

Harrison FordUPDATE: According to Deadline, the reports are untrue.

Per a producer from Alcon Entertainment, which is backing the remake: “It is absolutely patently false that there has been any discussion about Harrison Ford being in Blade Runner … To be clear, what we are trying to do with Ridley now is go through the painstaking process of trying to break the back of the story, figure out the direction we’re going to take the movie and find a writer to work on it. The casting of the movie could not be further from our minds at this moment.”

EARLIER: Before you take to the streets in a maniacal riot, bear in mind that this news is far from finalized: Harrison Ford is in talks—very early talks—to join Ridley Scott’s developing Blade Runner revival.

Back in November, director Scott gave the nebulous remark that Ford’s iconic Blade Runner hero Rick Deckard would “not really” be featured in the new film. It has since been wondered if the movie will act as a sequel, a remake, a revisit to the vivid world of the first, a parody, or any other possible manifestation. If Ford does become attached as a central character, we might assume sequel.

What many might be wondering: does a new Blade Runner film featuring Ford as Decker promise to reveal outright the answer to the question that has resonated since the first: is Rick Deckard a replicant? And, more importantly, should it? The glory of Blade Runner is invested heavily in this mystery. We don’t know for sure (although we all have plenty of theories, and pieces of evidence to back them up), and we probably never should. So, let us hope that even a Deckard-centric Blade Runner sequel will not come out and answer this question.

But wondering on this matter is jumping the gun. Ford is only in the earliest stages of discussion, and might not have a role at all, let alone a central one. Although the idea of a Blade Runner remake is controversial as is, I think that as long as one exists, we’d probably like to see Ford involved in some way.
