Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania earned a very scary $11 million on Friday and is on track for a debut north of $38 million which would be a record opening weekend for the month of September beating 2002’s Sweet Home Alabama and its $35.65 million debut.
Sony is having a great weekend grabbing second place as well with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Rian Johnson’s intense hitman time-travel flick Looper starting with a solid $6.9 million on Friday and an expected opening weekend of around $19 million.
In third place is Open Road’s End of Watch with $2.4 million for Friday and expected second weekend of $8 million according to the distributor of this intense cop drama which will have close to $26 million total by the end of the weekend.
Fourth place goes to Relativity’s horror entry House at the End of the Street which earned $2.33 million on Friday and should take in a expected three day gross of around $7 million in this is second weekend and a total through Sunday of around $22 million.
Fifth place on Friday went to Warner Bros. Clint Eastwood baseball drama Trouble With the Curve which took in $2.3 million on Friday in its second weekend of release and should wind up with around $7 million for the weekend and a cume through Sunday night of around $22 to $23 million.
