Hugh Grant to Defy Reality in ‘Cloud Atlas’

Hugh GrantNothing says time-defying multi-human like Hugh Grant.

The British actor known best for his stammering charm is joining the tour de force that will be the Tykwer/Wachowski sensation Cloud Atlas. In case you don’t know about this genre-implosion, it takes different people from different places and times and somehow connects them through a series of events that defy time/space continuums, reality, film, and The Matrix. Well, a matrix. Plus, it is stated that actors will be playing multiple roles, further launching us into a state of gratifying perplexity.

Starring (and co-starring) in this monument to eyebrow-raising are Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent, Ben Whishaw and Bae Doona.

The film is based on a novel by David Mitchell, whose variety of characters expands from a 19th Century explorer to a post-apocalyptic Pacific Islander kid. It seems that the role of a “high-minded journalist” from the Reagan era might be best suited for newest castmember Hugh Grant. He’s high-minded. He’s literate. He seems particularly adept at pointing out flaws. There’s also a vanity publisher character that, for more or less the same reasons, Grant would fit right into. Then again, this film might not just set out to defy our conception of reality. So we could see Grant in a far less traditionally-Grant position.

Although, we should certainly hope not. The human race can deal with a destruction of its understanding of time and space. But we like our Hugh Grant just the way it is.
